Sustainability at Jesmond Dene House
- We have replaced conventional lamps with low energy equivalent
- We have replaced batteries in remote controls and similar devices with re-chargable batteries
- Some of the rain water run- off from our roofs is collected in water butts for use in irrigating the gardens
- Glass, paper and cardboard are recycled
- All uncooked organic waste from the kitchen is composted on property and subsequently used in the gardens
- A selection of the fruit, vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen are grown in the hotel garden on site or at our additional garden at St Mary’s, Stannington
- The kitchen use local produce to the maximum extent subject to availability. This connection with the local economy is promoted in our marketing material for the benefit of ourselves and local producers
- The majority of our commercial relationships are with companies located within the region
- A number of our corporate and function clients are from the local community
- We offer support to a number of local charities via raffle and auction prizes
- We support the Street Smart charity via the restaurant in November and December
- Collection boxes for St Oswalds Hospital and Marie Curie are regularly displayed at reception
- Regular show-rounds of the hotel for local schools
- Bird boxes in our gardens. The gardens are extensively stocked with flowers and herbs for the benefit of nectar-feeding insects.
- On-going improvements have been made to the development of the garden
- Bicycle parking facilities are on the premises. Our information guide includes public transport information, for arriving at the hotel and for travel within the region, and walks in Jesmond Dene and the surrounding areas
- Employment of local staff where possible
- Re-cycling of towel usage
- Staff encouraged to support the ‘Cycle2work’ scheme
